Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 14)

Avery imagined a slide all the way down to the bottom of the mountain. They all slid down the slide. One of the gummy bears, who was a doctor, brought her to a bed in a gummy house. Just as the gummy bear was about to give her medicine, Charlotte remembered that last time she had been in Candyland, she swam in chocolate milk with Marista, the mermaid and her friends. She realized she wasn’t allergic to chocolate when she was in Candyland, which was great news! She had just been overreacting.

“Wait, I’m ok! I can have chocolate!” she said to the gummy bear doctor. The gummy bear was gray. She had never tasted that flavor!

Charlotte looked down as she was lying in bed. She saw a friendship bracelet with an “R” on it. Charlotte put the bracelet in her pocket and came running out of the house to tell her friends and sister that she wasn’t allergic to chocolate in Candyland. The gummy bear doctor followed.

Charlotte said, “I’m feeling much better, thank you! Doctor Gummy, what flavor are you?”

The gummy doctor said, “Cherry.”

“But you’re gray, not red!” said Charlotte.

“My magic was drained, and that drains my flavor. The mountain was invisible because its magic was drained.”

The four friends had a big task in front of them. Not only did they have to warn Rachel about Collie, but they had to figure out how to stop the magic from being drained in this world.

“I’m going to disappear soon, and then I’ll be invisible forever, unless the girl returns and saves us like she promised,” moaned the doctor gummy bear.

Charlotte then turned around. “What girl? Is it Rachel?”

“I didn’t catch her name,” said the adorable and moany gummy bear. “But she had blonde hair and a determined look on her face.”

“That’s Rachel!” said Charlotte. She showed her friends the friendship bracelet with the “R” on it.

Avery said, “Can I see that? Yes, Rachel was here. That’s a fact. We made these this morning before she disappeared!”

They had to find out where she went. They looked around. She could have gone back over the mountain, or she could have ran through the woods.

“She went that way!” moaned the gummy bear, pointing to the candy-cane woods. “And then she disappeared! She’ll never return. I should accept my fate.”

The gummy bear laid on the ground and made the sound “Ugh”. Then the little gummy bear disappeared. They couldn’t see him anymore and he couldn’t speak to them anymore. Charlotte wiped a tear from her eye.

“We might have a chance of still saving him, but only if we find out where Rachel is and act brave!” said Charlotte. “I’m the princess of power, and I don’t give up!”

She ran into the candy-cane woods. The three girls followed behind.

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 13)

“How did a ladder come out of Nowheresville?” asked Charlotte.

“As Princess of Imagination, my power is to think of things and make them appear out of nowhere!” replied Avery.

“I thought you just had good ideas! You didn’t tell me!” said her big sister, Charlotte, feeling hurt. “I thought we always told each other everything!”

“I’m sorry, Charlotte” said Avery. “I won’t keep anymore secrets.”

Avery thought of an elevator on the side of the mountain that would take them up and down whenever they wanted. And it appeared! It was purple, with bows and ribbons all over it.

Lea said, in a proper voice, “After you!” and the three girls walked into the elevator, with Lea following after, walking on her hands.

The elevator took them to the top of the mountain. The mountain was invisible so it looked like they were flying in mid-air!

The girls were scared to death to leave the elevator when they got to the top because they didn’t know what they were stepping out onto and didn’t known where it ended. Without Rachel around, there was no one to go first. Rachel was always ready to take a risk.

“After you!” said Charlotte.

“No after you, I insist! You’re the oldest...” said Avery.

“How about you go first, Kate?” said Lea.

“It’s safe!” said Avery, like it was nothing...

“Alright,” said Kate.

Kate walked to the front of the elevator doors and took a step. She was standing in mid-air!

“Avery, can you get me a rope, just in case I walk too far and fall off the edge of the mountain?” asked Kate.

Avery imagined a rope and handed it to Kate. She tied it around her waist, and tied the other end to the elevator. Kate didn’t realize it, but the bird she had been talking to before they built the elevator was following behind her. This one bluebird brought all his friends with him! She took the next step. “It’s safe!” she yelled.

Lea said, “Don’t look down!” as Charlotte approached Avery. “I sometimes get scared when I go off the diving board into the foam pit in gymnastics class.”

Kate felt that her foot was not placed on ground like it had been before. Her foot took a step onto nothing and she began falling down the mountain!

Kate grabbed onto the rope but she kept falling! The rope was very long, she realized. Soon it caught her just a second before hitting the ground. It all happened so fast, Charlotte wasn’t even able to grab the rope to pull her up in time! Suddenly, the bluebird and his friends flew down and grabbed Kate by her sleeves, flying her back up to the top of the mountain!

“Don’t walk over that way!” said Kate.

Avery went next. She imagined three sticks, giving them to each of the girls so they could find their way and not fall off the mountain!

“I feel something gooey!” said Charlotte, as she felt the ground with her stick. She knelt down and felt the ground with her hand. Something was on her hand, but she couldn’t see what it was! She knew that everything was candy, so it wouldn’t harm her. But she was allergic to chocolate.

“How about you taste what’s on my finger?” she said to Kate, and wiped it on her nose.

Before the girls knew what was happening, Lea grabbed something from the mountain and threw it at Charlotte!

“Chocolate fight!” Lea said. Charlotte opened her mouth surprised and there the chocolate went, into her mouth!

“It tastes like chocolate!” said Charlotte, trying to spit it out onto the ground. She started to get a little itchy. “Lea!” she yelled. “What did you do? You knew I was allergic to chocolate! You took that risk!” She started to itch rapidly.

“Oops!” said Lea. “I’m sorry!”

“We can go down to the gummy bear town and get help!” said Avery, concerned for her sister.

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 12)

While Collie was plotting against Rachel in her palace, the four friends arrived on their bikes to the Cotton Candy Clouds. It was a border wall that reached from the sky to the ground. Everyone thought it was the end of Candyland and no one could pass through it, without the Lost Princess of course.

“How are we going to get across the end of the world?” asked Kate.

“It’s impossible!” yelled Lea.

Charlotte touched the cotton candy clouds. At that very moment, far beyond the clouds, Rachel’s locket began to glow pink. Pink was the color of power. Rachel remembered pink was the color of Charlotte’s princess uniform when they had first arrived in Candyland one year ago. The locket began to shine brighter. She held it to her heart and all of a sudden, a bright light appeared in the wall – a rainbow of all the colors. Then it revealed a doorway. Charlotte was about to step in when she heard a cackle from the Cotton Candy Clouds.

“Rachel’s not going to know what hit her!” It was a voice that sounded like Princess Collie!

“No!” thought Kate. She remembered that voice from the palace and the big battle a year ago. It couldn’t be! “Lea, Charlotte, Avery! Collie is plotting against Rachel!” exclaimed Kate. They all listened in to Collie while she talked to herself about her plan to rule the worlds. The friends knew they were the only ones who could stop Collie and help Rachel.

Charlotte, Kate and Avery walked through the doorway into the clouds. But Lea thought that was too plain for a princess. So, she did a double cartwheel into the portal right before it closed.

The friends fell into a field onto fudgy mud and saw the lonely tree in the corner. They could see a Gummy Bear town in the distance. Lea ran towards the mountain to go the gummy bear town. She had a sweet tooth for gummy bears! But she knocked into an invisible mountain and fell into a backwards somersault, landing on her knees. “Ugh! Is that like a trampoline or something?” she said to herself.

The tree began to talk and said, “There is a mountain there. It’s invisible because it faded.”

“Oh. Have you seen a blonde-haired girl with a determined look on her face?” asked Charlotte.

“Yes! That’s the Lost Princess!” said the tree.

“Well,” said Charlotte, “We need to know where she went. I wish I had my notebook paper so I could record where we’ve been...”

Avery gave a little grin.

“She climbed the mountain!” said the tree, in a moany voice, “to fight the licorice ropes.”

“What licorice ropes?” asked Charlotte.

“You mean these?” asked Lea, who was eating a licorice rope from the ground.

Nearby, Kate was laying down on her belly propping her head up with her hands. She was talking to a little blue bird, asking if he could help them get a good view from above to find Rachel.

Avery was imagining a ladder so they could climb up the mountain, and it was appearing out of nowhere, then fell over and snapped into two!

“What was that?” said Charlotte, hearing the big crash that it made.

“Just a ladder that broke into two,” said Avery. “Totally normal...”

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 11)

Rachel said, “You have been very kind and brave. You must protect your home. I’ll be back for you and free you from this horrible place!” She ran into the woods and yelled back, “Protect your home with your life!” Her voice echoed into the distance as she ran.

When she arrived at the Hershey Kiss town, she saw that the licorice hadn’t found them yet. She must warn them before it came!

“There is licorice coming after you! You must protect yourselves!” she declared. “I need a quick way to the chocolate mountain. Can you help me?”

“Yes we can!” said a little Hershey kiss. She was wearing a silver paper dress and little silver crown and was holding a scepter with a heart on the top. “I am Queen Hershey. There is a marshmallow raft over there... you sit on it and paddle with the candy cane down the hot-cocoa river and you’ll arrive quicker than ever!”

            “Thank you!” Rachel said.

“Just make the sound ‘Mwah’ if you need our help!” said the Queen Hershey, blowing a kiss.

            “I will!” said Rachel.

Meanwhile, Princess Collie of the Cotton Candy Clouds sat at her tea table planning her plot against Rachel. She was secretly Rachel’s adopted sister and had a plan to get rid of her so she could be the one and only Lost Princess of Candyland. Collie wanted to travel to earth through the portal and rule both worlds so that all the worlds would obey her will.  The Lost Princess of Candyland was in line for the throne. The thumping sounds Collie claimed to hear were the chocolate giants, which were posing as mountains and who would get rid of Rachel for good! Little did Rachel know, she had a great task ahead of her to defeat Collie, save the earth and become the ruler of Candyland!

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 10)

She saw licorice rope wrapping around the gummy bears. They were losing their colors and turning gray! Then when she looked behind her, the mountain disappeared! It was invisible because it was losing its color and magic! One of the cherry gummy bears said, in an adorable voice, “Help us! It’s draining my flavor!” Rachel ran rapidly, taking off the licorice, but it starting wrapping around the trees around them! Then she saw a fire in the corner of the village. She said, loudly so that they could all hear her, “Take off the licorice from every creature and throw it into the fire quickly! Then it might lose its life and become regular licorice, which happens to be my favorite candy.”

They threw the licorice into the fire.

“Defend your village! I have to hurry on and see where this licorice is coming from!”

She expected it to come from the chocolate mountains. She ran through the candy-cane tree woods, unraveling licorice from every tree she saw. The trees all came to life and started helping each other! “Defend your forest!” she yelled as she left through the woods.

When she came to the Sour Patch Kids Village, they surrounded her with candy cane spears and they were sharp.

“Why did you come to our town?” they demanded. “To bring more licorice?”

“No! I came to save you! I’m the Lost Princess!” said Rachel.

“From the Legend!” said one of the sour patch kids. “Your destiny is to come and save us from this licorice!”

They put down their candy cane branch spears. She saw through the woods bouncing and jumping licorice and it was coming towards them! It started to cover their sugar-coated gummy houses! The sour patch kids were trapped in balls of tangled up licorice.

Rachel was standing next to a little orange sour patch kid, so they both were trapped inside a licorice ball. He had a spear. She grabbed it and cut open the side of the licorice dome they were stuck in. But it immediately grew back together like it hadn’t been cut at all. She was stuck! The longer she was stuck here, the more magic would be drained and she wouldn’t be able to save Candyland. Then she imagined the licorice could travel beyond the Cotton Candy Clouds and destroy her friends on the other side of Candyland, too, sucking them into a black hole of some sort! Rachel learned about black holes in science. She couldn’t let that happen!

She took the spear, and from the bottom she sliced upwards, across the top and down the other side in one quick swipe. She quickly grabbed the sour patch kid’s hand and ran out before it closed up again. If they had been a little bit slower, it could have cut their legs off while they were jumping out. Rachel was in warrior-mode!

She sliced down domes of licorice with the spear, one after another, freeing the kids from their dome cages as they leaped out before it closed back around them. The sour patch kids saw what she was doing so they grabbed their spears, spread chocolate warrior paint on their faces with their fingers, and started slicing licorice domes open to free their friends. Soon they had sliced them all in half and freed all their friends. Then they threw all the licorice they could find into the fire, where they had been roasting marshmallows earlier. Rachel tried to give back the spear to the little orange sour patch kid, but he responded in his little adorable voice, “You keep it! You’ll need it more than we do!”

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 9)

Meanwhile, Rachel was on top of the mountain trying to get a view of what the land was like. She sat her bookbag down and opened it up. Inside were binoculars, the piece of paper that Avery had given her before she left, pens, and some candy she snagged at the palace in case she got hungry. Rachel used the binoculars to see what was around her. She saw little gummy bears walking around and sour patch kids roasting marshmallows over a fire. She saw Hershey kisses with little faces washing their clothes in a hot cocoa river. Beyond that, she saw chocolate mountains in the distance.

“Well, I guess that’s a view of the whole land,” she said to herself. She took out the notebook paper. Rachel saw that Avery had filled in Cookie Islands, Icecream Mountains, Lollipop valley and forest, and Candy Gardens. She added “Lord Licorice’s bat-filled jail cell” to the bottom of the paper, and used one of her pens to write “Rock Candy Mountain” on the list. Then she listed the places she saw through her binoculars: Hershey Kiss Town, Sour Patch Kids Village, Candy Cane Tree Woods, Gummy Bear Village and Chocolate Mountains.

Rachel waved goodbye to the lonely tree below and quickly packed up her stuff and put her book bag back on. She leaned down and pulled a piece of rock candy off the top of the mountain, finding fudge underneath. She used a piece of rock candy to shovel some fudge out and spread it like a slide on the top edge of the mountain. She put the piece of rock candy into her backpack in case she needed something sharp. She also grabbed it as a souvenir to show her friends when she got home. Then she slid right down into the gummy bear town.

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 8)

The four girls put on their crowns and a bright light appeared. Lea got off her bike for a minute. She pulled out her red and white striped holiday bike ramp from her garage and sat it in the right spot. Lea had a “holiday” everything... she even had a holiday helmet! She was very festive.

They were going to ride their bikes on the ramp to jump into the bright portal in the sky. Charlotte rode through first and disappeared. Then Lea, Kate and Avery trailed behind on their bikes. They all appeared in the Candyland Palace.

            “That’s convenient!” remarked Charlotte.

“Hey, I thought we’d be in the Gingerbread Village!” said Kate. “Aw man...” she thought she’d see Mystery right away.

“Girls, why are you here?” said the Queen.

“We’re here to rescue Rachel!” said the girls.

“Rachel is not here,” replied the Queen. “She’s in the Cotton Candy Clouds trying to cross the border.”

“At the end of the world?” said Avery.

“We’ll do anything to save Rachel!” said Charlotte.

The girls got back on their bikes and started out of the palace, through the Candy Gardens.

“Don’t ride over me! Don’t ride over me!” said a weed in a whiny voice.  Avery rode purposely right over the rude weed.

“I’ve been waiting a year to do that!” she exclaimed to her sister Charlotte. The rude weed was squished down flat and all of the other plants began saying “Avery! Avery! Avery!” and Rose waved goodbye and screamed “Thank you!” as they rode toward the Cotton Candy Clouds.

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 7)

The three girls rode down the road, since the sidewalk wasn’t shoveled. Kate explained all the fun things she would do with Mystery and Snowball. Snowball, the rabbit, was her other animal friend. But Kate knew Snowball was more fond of Charlotte.

Lea lived 12 houses down from Kate. When they finally got to Lea’s side of the neighborhood, they arrived at Lea’s house. It had a Christmas wreath on the door. Lea’s family, which was her parents and little brother, all loved Christmas. Kate knocked on Lea’s white door. Lea came out dressed in a red winter coat and green mittens.

“I was just about to go see you, Kate!” she said.

“We have something urgent to talk to you about!” replied Kate. “Rachel went to Candyland and she’s the lost princess! She disappeared out of the thin air and we need to go help her!”

“Rachel is a lost princess?” Lea gave a little giggle.

In a blur, Lea went down on her knees and did a somersault right into the garage!  “Perfect landing! Those gymnastics lessons paid off!” Lea pulled out her bike. Her bike was red and green striped with a white basket and a picture of a gingerbread man. Lea had a holiday bike AND a regular bike!

Avery said, “Why don’t we take our bikes to Candyland? It will take less time to get to the palace and find out where Rachel went.”

“Great idea!” said Charlotte.

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 6)

Meanwhile, Avery couldn’t believe what she had just seen. She had to tell her big sister, Charlotte, about this! She said goodbye to Rachel’s big sister, who was 21 years old and also her guardian, and ran across the street to her home. Avery burst into her house and yelled “Charlotte!” at the top of her lungs. Charlotte came rushing down from her loft, where they shared a bedroom.

“What is the matter with you?” asked Charlotte. “I was trying to sleep!” It was morning and Charlotte always slept in.

Avery spilled the beans to her big sister about Rachel, who was the lost princess of Candyland, and how she had disappeared into thin air.

“We must get Kate and Lea. We have to go to Candyland and help her!” exclaimed Charlotte, the Princess of Power.

Charlotte and Avery put on their coats and mittens, for it was winter in New Jersey where they all lived. They got their bikes from the garage. Avery’s bike was blue with a pink and white basket in the front. Charlotte’s was identical to Avery’s.

They rode to Kate’s house first, which was on the way to Lea’s house. They knocked on her big red door. Kate opened the door and said, “What is it, Avery and Charlotte?” Avery explained what she told Charlotte about Rachel.

Kate said, “We must go help her!” Kate ran into the garage and got onto her to green bike, which had an owl picture on the basket. She picked out this bike because it reminded her of Mystery, the owl whom she met in Candyland. Since she was the Princess of Kindness, she could talk to animals and Mystery was one of her dearest friends in Candyland. She hadn’t seen him in a whole year so she was very excited to go.

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 5)

A face appeared. The tree yawned and woke up.

“Thank you,” said the tree in a drowsy voice. “You saved my life.”

”It was sleeping!” she said.

“I wasn’t sleeping,” said the tree. “These vines are poisonous to all of the candy plants and candy creatures here and they drain our magic.”

“Princesses never give up!” she explained.

“Wait a minute; you’re the princess from the legend!” said the tree. “Every hundred Candyland goes to sleep. I fear our time is up.”

But Rachel was in too much of a hurry to hear what the tree had to say. Rachel snapped off the vine completely, tied it around her waist and threw the other end up to the top of the mountain. It hooked onto a piece of rock candy. She used the candy cane step to get back up to the rock candy ledge and started to climb. Rachel knew if she fell, the licorice rope would catch her. But just in case she fell again, she placed a marshmallow on the ground so at least she would have a soft landing!

She climbed vigorously until she reached the top. The princess had fallen 6 times on her way up but that wouldn’t stop the Princess of Bravery!

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 4)

In the corner of the field, she discovered a lonely candy cane tree.  Rachel skipped over to the tree excitedly to make a new friend. Avery told Rachel that on the other side of Candyland, the trees and flowers talked in Rose’s Candy Gardens so she couldn’t wait to see what this candy cane tree had to say. The had never met a talking tree! She gently knocked on the trunk, but the tree didn’t answer. Rachel was puzzled.

“Well, I guess the trees don’t talk around here. Maybe it’s sleeping?” she thought in her mind.

She glanced back to the mountain and the color started to fade a bit. It went from a rich brown to a mud brown.

“I better get to the other side of the mountain quickly! It looks like the color of the mountain is draining!” She thought if the color drained completely, it might disappear. Rachel broke off a striped branch, ran rapidly over to the fudge base of the rock candy mountain, and stuck the candy cane branch into the fudge. Then she used it like a step to reach up to a piece of rock candy sticking out on the mountain.

The princess thought, “I have to keep climbing it!” So she went higher and higher.

She grabbed the next rock on the mountain. The rock that she was standing on was slippery because it had just rained spiced cider. Her foot slipped and she began falling off the mountain! She landed at the bottom of the mountain with a thump.

Rachel ran back over to the lonely tree. There was a licorice vine growing on the tree. She pulled the vine off and the candy cane tree’s branches began to move back and forth, stretching.

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 3)

Rachel appeared in the Cotton Candy Clouds. She didn’t know how she was flying, but then she realized she was sitting on a Cotton Candy Unicorn Pegasus Pony! It was a creature that she had never seen before! It had a gold horn, tall and loyal, with a mane that looked like a blue and pink lion’s mane, flowing like long cotton candy clouds and on its left front leg was a scar. It was wearing a collar. The collar had a gold embroidered letter “S” and was covered in jewels.

“You are not a wild unicorn,” said Rachel.

Rachel floated over Collie’s palace and easily across the border, back down to land. She landed with the unicorn in a fudgy field. There in the field was a whole herd of Cotton Candy unicorns! She hopped off and looked around. She tried to pet one but, unlike the unicorn with the “S” collar, they all scurried away, up into the clouds. Rachel was left alone in the field.

She looked up and saw a big mountain in front of her. She looked all around.

“I must be on the other side of the border! It’s not the end of Candyland!” she yelled theatrically. Her voice echoed far into the distance.

Rachel thought for a moment and said, “How will I cross the mountain to get to the other side?”

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 2)

Rachel appeared in the Candyland Palace. She was wearing a rainbow dress and a cape, and the crown was on her head. All of the princesses were gathered around. Even Collie, the fairy-princess of the Cotton Candy Clouds, was there at the palace. This was the first time Collie had been invited to a meeting at the palace with the other princesses. Mystery was there as well.

“What did you need me for?” asked Rachel to the rest of the princesses.

“Let Collie tell you,” said the Queen, and Collie began her story.

“I was hanging out with Mystery in the Cotton Candy Clouds earlier today. We were having tea, when we heard noises on the other side.”

“Noises?” asked Rachel.

“Yes! Loud thumping sounds!”

“I didn’t see anything,” said Mystery. “But I heard them, too.”

“But I thought the other side was the end of Candyland?” Rachel said.

“I don’t think so,” said Collie.

“Then we must send someone across the Cotton Candy Clouds to see,” said Rachel.

“That’s why you’re here!” said Collie. “We think you can cross the Cotton Candy Cloud wall!”

“Me?” said Rachel.

“Yes, you,” said the Queen. “I have a gift for you.”

“What is it?”

The queen placed a locket in Rachel’s hands. It had five different sections: one rainbow, one pink, one green, one red and one purple. “Legend says this locket once belonged to the lost princess. That’s you, Rachel! When your friends need your help, their color will light up. It’s similar to the Summoner, but it can only summon your four friends. Legend says it has a secret power no one has discovered in our age of Candyland. Take the locket and hold it to your heart, then you can cross the Cotton Candy Cloud wall and go into the place no one has ever been! As long as I’ve had the locket, I never thought there was anything beyond the wall.”

“You’re the only hope left!” said Princess Collie.

“Wow,” said Rachel.

The queen placed the locket around Rachel’s neck. The queen asked her to hold it to her heart, and when she did, she disappeared into thin air!

Candyland Returns: The Secret Locket (Chapter 1)

Avery and Rachel sat in Rachel’s room at a little green table with two stools. It was Rachel’s homeschool desk. They were making friendship bracelets. Rachel’s was pink, blue and purple and it had a bead in the center with an “R” on it. She had just finished it. Avery’s was identical but hers had an “A” instead of an “R”.

They heard a beeping sound that was coming from Rachel’s crown, which was in her book bag hanging on a hook in her room.

“They are trying to summon you”, said Avery.

“Why are they trying to summon me?” asked Rachel.

“They must need you in Candyland!”

“Well, if they need me, I guess I should go...” replied Rachel.

Avery exclaimed, “Wait, I need to tell you something! You are the lost princess of Candyland! Marista said so.”

Rachel opened her mouth in astonishment.  She grabbed her book bag, placed the crown on her head and it began to glow.

“Wait!” Avery said. “Take this notebook paper that Charlotte was writing on when we were there last time. I’ve been keeping it in my pocket and writing down the places I saw in Candyland to surprise Charlotte. It might come in handy to known where you are.”

“Thanks Avery! ‘I wish to go to Candyland’” she recited. Poof! She disappeared.
